The Federalist Paper- Number 10

1.) Who was the author?
-James Madison

2.) When was the paper written?
- November 22, 1787

3.) Who was the audience of this paper?
- The People of the State of New York

4.) Read the following section from the Federalist #10
B"By a faction, I understand a number of citizen, weather amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community."
What is faction?
-Faction is the meaning of a small group within a larger one.

5.) What are some examples of faction today?
-An oil company, but mainly they all are involved in government (a branch, a community, etc.)

6.) The author states that there are two ways of removing the cause of faction;
* destroying the liberty which is essential to it's existence
* by giving to every citizen the same options, the same passions, and the same interests
How would these two action harm the American people if the government tried to use them on the people?
-Both of these ways harm the people, because they both strip the people of their God given rights, the right to freedom and freedom of choice; you can like and want and work for what you choose, we're not all made to like the same thing.

7.) What is the difference between a democracy and a republic?
- Speaking of Democrats and Republicans, the differences never end. Democrats believe in a more shared world, where you share your success as well as downfall. They are also more "understanding" to the ways of the world today; they don't ever want to offend anyone, therefore anything goes pretty much (same sex marriage, abortion, etc.) Republicans have a more conservative view that states not everything is OK.

8.) How would a Republic control factions according to the author?
-A Republic would be more concise and keep the system smaller. They would keep the people more in mind.
